Three tuition-free skill acquisition schools will be established by Abia in three senatorial districts. To Enhance the Projections of Artisanship

Under the train the young initiative of the Alex Otti administration, the state government of Abia State plans to create three skill acquisition schools in each of the three senatorial districts.

The residential schools, whose tuition will be waived, will teach young people in solar energy assembly and installation, POP design and installation, painting, masonry, tiling, and other related fields.

The State Commissioner for Information and Culture, Prince Okey Kanu, announced this while briefing reporters at Government House, Umuahia, along with a few of his colleagues on the results of this week’s Executive Council meeting. He noted that the state currently lacks the necessary courses to be focused on, so the academic calendar for the schools will be one year.

He said that the initiative supported the state government’s goal of preserving the state’s supply of craftsmen rather than bringing them in from elsewhere. The Information Commissioner disclosed that upon completion of their training, pupils will get financial empowerment.

In his own words, “This is a government that is interested in training people who will acquire skills and who will be trained so that they can stand on their own; it does not believe in empowering people with Keke and their likes.”

“So, the schools will be tuition-free and at the end of their training, they will be empowered with funds to go and start their own businesses”.

“Of course you know that for quite a while now we have been lacking in artisans that have these skills; most of the artisans that we have who have skills in these areas come from outside the state and country. So, the state government is poised to put an end to that to ensure that we have our own young people who will take up all those skills, acquire them and make a living from them”.

He announced the decision of the state government to suspend the February 2024 sanitation exercise earlier scheduled to hold on Saturday, February 24, attributing the suspension to the “commissioning of the Geometric Power plant which will be held on the same day.

He said that the state administration had decided to postpone the sanitation exercise that was originally planned for Saturday, February 24, 2024. The postponement was made due to the “commissioning of the Geometric Power plant which will be held on the same day.”

He urged Abians and locals to make sure their immediate surroundings were cleaned up that Saturday, saying, “The reason for suspension is the fact that we envisage that a lot of visitors would come from outside the state and when you have such important visitors you don’t need to impede their movement around the state.”

Regarding the state’s traffic rule violations, the commissioner declared that the administration is taking action and has a strong stance against cars driving against the flow of traffic.

In every region of the state, the government has outlawed what is known as “one way traffic.” Nowadays, driving against the flow of traffic is illegal. This is consistent with the ethos of doing things the correct way, which this administration advocates. Driving against traffic will therefore be considered a highly serious offense in the state coming ahead.

Taking advantage of the occasion, the Commissioner said that the Geometric Power Plant in Aba has begun receiving gas supplies in anticipation of the plant’s impending commissioning. It was emphasized that the gas supply will originate from Owaza in Ukwa West LGA.

In response to a query concerning the Abia State Government’s financial contribution to the power plant, Engineer Ikechukwu Monday, Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, clarified that Abia State has no investment in Geometric Power.

But we still have a stake in this, and the largest stake is ensuring that Aba receives enough electricity. Therefore, the people’s interest is present. Our strategy is to work with them to achieve success because we are aware that without power, industry—a crucial component of the governor’s plan to advance and expand manufacturing and industrialization in Aba—cannot be driven.

“We’re currently interested in obtaining power for Abians, and we’re working with Geometrics to make this happen in every manner.”
